Sectioning & Microdissection

Thermo Scientific CryoStar NX50 Cryostat

The Thermo Scientific CryoStar NX50 cryostat is used for thick and thin sectioning of cryo-preserved and embedded specimens. The instrument will cut sections of 0.5 microns up to 500 microns and at temperatures as low as -45 Celsius.

Instrument Access: Training for individual use is available. To schedule training, please email Michelle Mikesh.

Fees: trained users: $10/hour

Leica UltraCut Ultramicrotome

The Leica UCT is used for thick and thin sectioning of resin-embedded specimens. With good lighting, precise orientation of specimen and knife, plus the control of approach and feed from a separate unit, the UCT will cut sections as thin as 50nm for TEM or quickly cut 1-5 micron sections for light microscopy. Nearby in the lab is a knife breaker for making glass knives. We also have a cryo-chamber for sectioning at temperatures below -100C.

Instrument Access: Assisted use and training for individual use are available. To schedule assisted use or training, please email Michelle Mikesh.

Fees: trained users: $10/hour; assisted use: $80/hour

The CBRS Microscopy and Imaging Facility has a Vibratome 1000 Plus Sectioning System and a Spencer 820 Paraffin Microtome available for sample sectioning.

Instrument Access: Training for individual use is available. To schedule training, please email Michelle Mikesh.

Fees: They are free to use after training.
